Signature from the Kansas Congressman and Presbyterian minister
Signature: "Jn. A Anderson/Manhattan/Kansas". 7x3½. John Alexander Anderson (1834-1892) was a Republican U.S. Congressman from Kansas, serving in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1879 to 1891. A Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) graduate, Anderson became a Presbyterian minister, moving to Junction City, Kansas as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. He was instrumental in reestablishing agricultural education at Land-grant University (Manhattan, Kansas), and was named President of Kansas State in 1873 for his efforts. In 1891, President Benjamin Harrison (who was Anderson's college roommate) appointed Anderson consul general to Cairo. However, Anderson fell ill during his term and died in Liverpool, England while executing his duties. Kansas State University honored him with a building named Anderson Hall, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Lightly toned. Left edge worn. Fine condition.
