The only winner of two Nobel Prizes in one field (Physics, 1956, 1972) signs a handwritten letter congratulating a minister on his 100th birthday.
ALS: "John Bardeen", 1 page, 7¼x10½. No place, 1976 December 27. Begins: "To Reverend M.J. Forwood on his 100th birthday." In full: "Heartiest congratulations and greetings on attaining the celebrated age of 100. You have had a long, productive rewarding career and have enriched the lives of many people. Best wishes for a splendid birthday and future good health." Slightly creased. Fine condition. Accompanied by philatelic envelope, unsigned. First Day Cover honoring 25 years of transistors, picturing Bardeen, Walter Brattain and William Shockley, 8-cent Progress in Electronics stamp affixed, postmarked New York, N.Y., July 10, 1973, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Fine condition. Bardeen shared the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics with William Shockley and Walter Brattain "for their researches on semiconductors and their discovery of the transistor effect". In 1972, Bardeen became the only winner of two Nobel Prizes in one field when he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Leon N. Cooper and Robert Schrieffer "for their jointly developed theory of superconductivity, usually called the BCS-theory" in honor of the three physicists. Two items.
