JOHN GALSWORTHY - AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED 3/1914 - HFSID 190120

JOHN GALSWORTHY
He inscribed and signed for himself and his wife Ada in 1914.
Inscribed signature: "March 1914/Elizabeth Ellis/Very cordially from her grateful friends/Ada & John Galsworthy/The Inn of [illegible]", 4¾x2¼. British author John Galsworthy (1867-1933) was awarded the 1932 Nobel Prize in Literature for his novels (which include The Forsyte Saga trilogy), plays and short stories. He was an advocate of reforms, including women's rights, animal rights, and prison conditions, and was the first President of the International PEN writers' organization. Galsworthy began an affair with Ada Nemesis Galsworthy, the wife of a cousin, in 1895. The couple lived together clandestinely until her divorce in 1905, and were then married until his death. Ada was the model for unhappily married Irene in The Forsyte Saga. Irregular edges. Faint red line at left margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
