The congressman from California pens his name on this 3½x2 card in black ink
Signature: “John J. Allen Jr.”, in black ink, 3½x2 card. California congressman John Joseph Allen, Jr. (1899-1995) served in the U.S. House as a Republican. Allen enlisted in World War I, interrupting his undergraduate education to serve in the U.S. Navy as an apprentice seaman. After returning home he completed his bachelor's degree at the University of California at Berkeley in 1920, and then attended Cal Berkeley's law school, graduating in 1922. While operating as a practicing attorney, Allen gradually became involved in Oakland politics. He was a member of the Oakland Board of Education from 1923 to 1943, and functioned as president of the California State School Trustees Association (1936-1938). Allen once again became a member of the armed services during World War II, spending a total of 20 months in the South Pacific. Upon returning stateside Allen acted as vice chairman of the State commission on school districts (1946 and 1947). Elected to the 80th Congress as well as the five succeeding Congresses, Allen served in the U.S. House from 1947 to 1959. Once his congressional career came to a close, he was appointed Under Secretary of Commerce for Transportation and served from 1959 to 1961. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
