The 21st US Secretary of Agriculture signs with his best wishes.
Photograph signed: "Best wishes/John R. Block". B/w, 6x7 image, 8x10 overall. John Rusling Block (b.1935) is an American politician, former Secretary of Agriculture from 1981-1985. A native of rural Galesbug, Illinois, Block grew up a bona fide country boy on his family's farm, and was raised in agriculture. After graduating from West Point and serving the 101st Airborne, Block began his life-long career in agribusiness. This led to his appointment as the Illinois Director of Agriculture, and later the Secretary of Agriculture under President Ronalad Regan from 1981-1986. At a time when farmers were losing their land more swiftly than in the Great Depression, Block was the target for public scrutiny as the agriculture business began to crash. He helped negotiate new terms for the 1985 Farm Bill. Today he is the executive at John Deere, president of Food Distributors International and still serves the American government as a lobbyist. Fine condition.
