JONATHAN BOUCHER. Autograph Note signed: "Jonath. Boucher", 1p, 6¼x2¼, affixed to 7½x3½ sheet with handwritten caption at top. No place, no date. In full: "You must send a Rect. In full & I will pay you a Guinea & half. Your Humble Servant. [signature] *N.B. If this be The Remains of Japhet (which is the Title of one Publication of Powers's) do not send it." Boucher (1738-1804), an English-born Anglican clergyman who settled in Virginia in 1758, was staunchly loyal to the British Crown. His Tory sentiments made him so unpopular that he preached his final sermons with loaded pistols at the pulpit. He fled to England in September 1775. In 1797, he published thirteen of his discourses under the title, A View of the Causes and Consequences of the American Revolution. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition. Fine condition.
