Signature of the Civil War Georgia governor, on a strip of paper.
Signature: "Joseph E. Brown/Georgia", 7¼x3½. Joseph E. Brown (1821-1894), an ardent secessionist, was Governor of Georgia (1857-1865). To the chagrin of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, whom Brown called a tyrant, Brown applied extreme state's rights doctrines to the CSA as he had to the USA. He resisted the Confederate draft, tried to keep Georgia soldiers from leaving the state, and hoarded warehouses full of food and weapons at a time when Confederate armies were acutely short of both. Imprisoned briefly after the war, he returned as Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court (1865-1870) and US Senator (1880-1891). He enriched himself in the private sector through reliance on convict labor, including many former slaves. Brown's statue stands on the grounds of the Georgia capitol. His son, Joseph Mackey Brown, would also become Governor of Georgia. Left edge frayed and worn from binding. Lightly toned. Corners lightly worn. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Fine condition.
