WAR OF 1812 VETERANS: JOSEPH MANSFIELD AND HALL J. MERRETT; NATHAN
BOWEN. Manuscript DS: "Joseph Mansfield", 1p, 8x9¾.
Marblehead, Mass., 1839 April 19. Countersigned: "Hall J. Merrett"
and "Nathan Bowen". Bowen, a Notary Public and Justice of the Peace,
certifies that Mansfield, an orderly sergeant in the 40th Regiment in the War
of 1812 and now a silversmith, and Merrett, a private in the same company and
now a laborer, have signed this document stating they are acquainted with the
handwriting of Amos Stocker, also in the 40th Regiment, and that his
signature appears on a land patent which had been attached to this document (not
present). Fragile. Toned. Folds, shaded at folds. Vertical fold touches "fi" in
Mansfield. Lightly stained, nailhead-size one just touches the "f" in Mansfield.
1-inch separation at blank lower horizontal fold. ¼-inch separation at upper
horizontal fold touching 1 word (intact). Full 2-inch seal present, although top
of seal has separated (all intact). Remnant of pink ribbon. 3 file slashes at
blank left for ribbon. Lightly soiled.
