The outgoing Secretary of Commerce signs a letter introducing businessman and philanthropist Edward A. Filene to US trade officials in Vienna.
Typed Letter signed: "J. W. Alexander" as Secretary of Commerce, 1 page, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1920 April 24. On official letterhead to William Ford Upson, Trade Commissioner, c/o American Commissioner Halstead, Vienna, Austria. In full: "I take pleasure in introducing to you Mr. Edward A. Filene, of William Filenes Sons Company, of Boston, who is sailing for Europe primarily of attending the meeting of the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris. He will also visit various other European countries for the purpose of studying recent economic and commercial developments, and in the interests of his firm. Mr. Filene, as you probably know, played a very prominent part in securing delegates for the International Trade Conference which was held in Atlantic City last October. I should personally appreciate it if you would extend to Mr. Filene all the courtesies you can, consistent with your official duties. Very truly yours". Joshua Willis Alexander (1852-1936), a Missouri mayor, judge and legislator, represented that state in the US House of Representatives (1907-1919). A Democrat, he was active in shaping wartime shipping regulations. He served as Secretary of Commerce in the final years of the Wilson administration (1919-1921). Multiple mailing folds. Lightly toned and creased. Corners creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
