The U.S. Congressman from Georgia, best known for his work with the Interstate Commerce Commission, signs his name in black ink
Signature: "J.C. Clements/ Lafayette Ga" in black ink. 7x2½ clipping. Judson C. Clements (1846-1917) was a United States Representative from Georgia. At the age of seventeen Clements joined the Confederates States Army in January 1864, serving the remainder of the Civil War as a private and first lieutenant. After the war he opened a law practice and became involved with local and state politics, and in 1880 was elected to the United States House of Representatives, serving five terms, best known for writing legislation which authorized the Interstate Commerce Commission. In 1892, Clements was appointed by President Harrison to the Interstate Commerce Commission, and in 1910 was elected Chairman. Irregularly cut. Left edge frayed. Toned. Small pinpoint stains throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
