Morton wrote this letter in 1897 to Milton Doolittle from his home Arbor Lodge in Nebraska City, Nebraska about Doolittle's job as a receiver. Written on Morton's rare "Plant Trees" stationery.
Autograph letter signed "J Sterling Morton". 1 page, 4¾x7¾, 1 sheet folded, front and verso, with rare green "Plant Trees" cachet near top edge. "Arbor Lodge", Nebraska City, Nebraska, July 9, 1897. Addressed to "Hon. Milton S. Doolittle", North Platte, Nebraska. In full: "Dear Doolittle: You never sought the receivership. Mr Castor never made the remark attributed to him. You were recommended by me & Mr Eckels because, in my opinion, you were by education and experience fitted for the efficient discharge of the duties of a Receiver And your work has justified that opinion fully and satisfactorily The fellows who [illegible] falsehoods to secure your remorse cannot [illegible] Mr Eckels who is a practical and exceedingly cautious officer. You can send him this letter and depend upon me as your active friend". Morton (1832-1902, born in Adams, New York) was Secretary of Nebraska Territory (1858-1861) and served as President Grover Cleveland's Secretary of Agriculture in his second term (1893-1897). Morton also founded Arbor Day. Lightly toned, stained and creased. Staple holes in upper left shoulder. Folded twice vertically and four times horizontally. Otherwise in fine condition.
