LADY NANCY ASTOR - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 10/20/1925 - DOCUMENT 3702

NANCY ASTOR
The first woman to ever serve in the British House of Commons sends "very informal note" to friend asking her to accompany her to a luncheon, signs name in black ink
Typed letter signed: "Nancy Astor" in black ink. 1 page, 7½x6. Plymouth, England. 1925 October 20. To "Dear Mrs. Gardiner". In full: "Thank you so much for your kind letter. I wonder if you can come to luncheon here with me to-morrow, Wednesday, at 1.15. If you could I should be so pleased and hope you can manage it. Please forgive this very informal note. Yours sincerely." Born and raised in America, Nancy Astor (1879-1964) married Englishman Waldorf Astor in 1906. When he inherited the title of Viscount and was elevated to the House of Lords, Lady Astor was elected to his former seat in Parliament (1919), serving there until her retirement in 1945 and was the first woman to serve in the House of Commons. A member of the Conservative Party, which championed the rights of women and children, Astor was renowned for her sharp repartee with Winston Churchill. An example: Astor - "Winston, if I were your wife I'd put poison in your coffee." Churchill - "Nancy, if I were your husband I'd drink it." Irregularly cut. Horizontal and vertical folds, 1 of the latter touching the "t" of signature. Lightly soiled. Mounting tape stains (¼-inch square) at all four corners. Overall, fine condition.
