and Minneapolis". Fine condition. Accompanied by photograph,
unsigned. Color, 3½x3½. Candid photograph of the Archbishop. Ink note (unknown
hand) on verso: "Taken: May 8, 1968/by:/Veronica A. Caffrey". Minor
surface creases. Light postal impression at upper right background. Overall,
fine condition. Photograph is dated two years after the Diocese of St. Paul
was expanded by the Vatican to include its "twin city" of Minneapolis.
Archbishop Leo Binz (1900-1979) had been ordained as a Priest in 1924 and
was named a Bishop in 1942. From 1949-1954, he served as Coadjutor
Archbishop of Dubuque, becoming the sixth Bishop and fourth Archbishop of
Dubuque in 1954. After serving in the position until 1962, Binz was named
Archbishop of St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1966, the Vatican added "and
Minneapolis" to the title to reflect the equal stature of the "twin cities", and
Binz served as Archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis until 1975. After
his death in 1979, Binz was named an Archbishop Emeritus. Two
