LESLIE ASPIN, JR.
Signature from the Congressman (1971-1993) and Secretary of Defense (1993-1994)
Signature: "Les Aspin". 3½x2 card signed in black ink. Leslie Aspin, Jr. (1938-1995) was born in Wisconsin, educated at Yale and Oxford (he was a Rhodes Scholar), receiving a PH.D in economics from M.I.T (1966). Entering the Army as an officer, he served at the Pentagon as a systems analyst (1966-1968). In 1970, he ran for Congress as a peace candidate opposing the Vietnam War, was elected and served from 1971-1993. In 1985 he became chairman of the Armed Services Committee; he supported Reagan's policies on the MX missile and aid to the Nicaraguan Contras. In 1991 he again supported the Republican administration's position (George H. W. Bush) on using military force against Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. Having been an advisor to the Clinton Presidential campaign, Aspin was named Secretary of Defense (1993-1994). In one year, he was responsible for: 1) implementation of the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy on homosexuals serving in the military, 2) eligibility of women serving in combat, 3) ending the Strategic Defense Initiative by downgrading it to the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization, 4) intervention in Haiti to reinstate Aristide, 5) nuclear weapons development in North Korea, 6) the worsening crisis in Bosnia, 7) and quite possible the worst - Operation Somalia. After he left the DOD, Aspin joined the international affairs program at Marquette University where they have named their Washington government center in his honor. He died at age 56. Fine condition.
