While Secretary of State, he sends a private correspondence to a colonel about a compensation case he is anxious to see resolved.
Autograph Letter signed: "Lewis Cass", 2 pages (front and verso), 5x8. No place, 1860 September 20. To a colonel (name illegible). In full: "I send you this hasty note, to remind you of E. M. Bennett [?], which I mentioned to you and Gov. Floyd the other day, and in which I take a great deal of interest. I hope you will be able to send compensation for him upon the frontier, however moderate it seems. I am sure he will acquit himself well. Truly your friend". Lewis Cass (1786-1866) was Governor of the Michigan Territory (1813-1831), and later represented Michigan in the US Senate (1845-1848, 1849-1857). He was the Democratic candidate for President in 1848, running on a platform of Popular Sovereignty (which would have left to each state the decision on whether to allow slavery there). When he lost to Whig Zachary Taylor, he became the first non-incumbent Democrat to lose a Presidential election. Cass was Secretary of War under President Jackson (1831-1836) and Secretary of State under President James Buchanan (1857-1860). Although previously considered a "dough face" (a northern Democrat sympathetic to the South), he resigned in 1860 to protest Buchanan's weak stand on the issue of secession. Horizontal fold creases, not affecting signature. Lightly creased. Minor show through verso to front. Lightly soiled with minor ink smudges. Otherwise, fine condition.
