LLOYD M. COOKE - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 12/07/1973 - DOCUMENT 155075

LLOYD M. COOKE
The award-winning chemist is pessimistic about environmental progress.
Typed Letter signed: "L. M. Cooke", 1 page, 8½x11. New York, N. Y., 1973 December 7. On his letterhead as Director of Urban Affairs, Union Carbide Corporation, to David A Marcus, Palm Springs, California. In full: "I must apologize for the delay in my reply to your letter of September 20th. Unfortunately your request fell low on my priority list because I have been outside the environmental affairs movement for three years. I will try to reply to your three key questions. There has been remarkably little advancement toward an international movement for survival. If there has been any movement, it has been backward. Obviously I am dissatisfied with this lack of progress. However, because of my interpretation of the nature of man and society, I am not surprised. In fact, I predict the present international energy crisis will cause 'temporary' and 'expedient' reverses to many progressive environmental moves of the past eight years. I also predict that further constructive forward progress will not take place until one or more serious international environmental accidents occur. I am sorry that my reply is so pessimistic, but such is what I see and anticipate. Very truly yours". Lloyd M. Cooke (1916-2001) was a research chemist at Union Carbide, and later Director of Urban Affairs for the Company. He also headed the Chicago chapter of the American Chemical Society and was President of the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering. In 1970, he won the Procter Prize for Scientific Achievement, based on two criteria: quality of scientific research; and ability to communicate research findings across disciplinary lines. He was the author of many articles, and a textbook on chemistry and the environment. Normal mailing folds. Fine condition.
