ARTHUR JOHN BIGGE
The private secretary to Queen Victoria signs this letter in which he thanks the recipient for a transparency of Windsor Castle
Autograph letter signed: "Arthur Bigge" in black ink. 4½x7¼. December 10, 1896. Written on letterhead of Windsor Castle, to "Messr. Fall", in full: "Sir, The Queen has seen the photographic transparency and I am now returning it and at the same time I am commanded to thank you for submitting this interesting historical record for Her Majesty's inspection. Yrs faithfully". Lieutenant-Colonel Arthur John Bigge, 1st Baron Stamfordham (1849-1931), was a British soldier and courtier. He was Private Secretary to Queen Victoria from 1895 until her death in January 1901, and to George V during most of his reign. As Private Secretary to the sovereign he was sworn of the Privy Council in 1910 and elevated to the peerage as Baron Stamfordham, of Stamfordham in the County of Northumberland, in 1911. He was the maternal grandfather of Lord Adeane, Private Secretary to Elizabeth II from 1953 to 1972. Lightly toned and stained. Normal mailing folds. Letter affixed to larger sheet along with clippings about Windsor Castle and Bigge. Three re-enforced holes in right margin. Photo copies of letter included. Otherwise, fine condition.
