LT. GENERAL MARSHALL S. CARTER - INSCRIBED PHOTOGRAPH SIGNED 10/25/1970 - HFSID 171655

 
MARSHALL S. CARTER. Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Tom Alford-/with best wishes/Marshall S Carter 25 Oct. 1970". Color, 8x10. During WWII, Marshall S. Carter (1909-1993) served in the Logistics Group of the War Department General Staff and as Deputy Chief of Staff in the China Theater of Operations. In 1946, he became an aide to General George C. Marshall, who was then a Special Envoy to China. He rose to the rank of Diplomatic Minister, and helped to supervise postwar programs in Europe, assisting Secretary Marshall at five major foreign conferences. His other military posts included Chief of Staff of the Continental Air Defense Command, Head of the North American Air Defense Command, Chief of Staff of the 8th Army in Korea and Commander of the Army Air Defense Center at Fort Bliss, Texas. Lieutenant General Carter later served as Deputy Director of the CIA (1962-1965) and Director of the National Security Agency (1965-1969). Fine condition.
