The former US Army Surgeon General writes about his father, a country doctor.
Autograph Letter signed: "Quinn H. Becker/Lt. Gen. US Army (Ret)/Surgeon Gen. 1985 to 1988", 1 page, 7x8½. No place, no date. Under his 3-star general's letterhead to "Dear Tom", in full: "Thanks for the story. I enjoyed it and believe the message it carries. My Father was a country doctor and graduated from Med School in 1928 at age 36. He visited many patients on horseback. Best wishes". Quinn H. Becker graduated from LSU Medical School in 1956. He became a US Army surgeon in 1962, serving in US base hospitals before being assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division in Germany. He was Assistant Chief of Orthopedic Services at Walter Reed Hospital, before serving as a medical battalion commander with the 1st US Air Cavalry Division in Vietnam (1970-1971). After increasingly important posts, included chief US Army surgeon in Europe, he became US Army Surgeon General (1985-1988), retiring as a lieutenant general. In November 2008, Becker was among 104 generals and admirals urging President-elect Obama to abandon the "don't ask - don't tell" policy and allow gays to serve openly in the US armed forces. Two horizontal folds. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
