STEPHEN J. CHAMBERLIN. Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Gen. Gunner/with appreciation for/your very fine service/S.J. Chamberlin/Maj Gen". B/w, 8x10. Lieutenant General Stephen J. Chamberlin (1889-1971) headed the military Chamberlin Board created in 1949 to study "the Negro manpower problem". It concluded, in 1950, that "increased opportunities for colored soldiers would adversely affect the fighting spirit and morale of the Army in general". The Chamberlin Board favored the traditional pattern of segregation in the military. In 1948, President Truman had issued an executive order providing for "equality of treatment and opportunity in the armed forces without regard to race, color, religion, or national origin." However, it was not until the end of the Korean War that full integration of the armed forces had been achieved. Surface striations, barely visible head on. Lightly creased.
