The first female U.S. Secretary of State poses for official photograph, signs name in silver ink
Inscribed photograph signed: "To Irene,/ Best Wishes/ Madeleine Albright" in silver ink. Color, 8x10. Madeleine Albright (b. 1937) is a Czech-born American politician and diplomat, best known as the first woman to have become the United States Secretary of State, a position she served from 1997 to 2001. The daughter of a Czech diplomat, Albright's family was forced to flee to England in 1939 after Nazi-occupation; believing for most of her life it was for political reasons, Albright later learned her family as Jewish and that three of her grandparents had died in German concentration camps. Her family moved to the U.S. after communist takeover of Czechoslovakia, and Albright excelled in school, earning a degrees from Wellesley College and Columbia University; she worked for Jimmy Carter's security adviser, and during the administrations of Reagan and Bush she worked for several nonprofit organizations, her Washington, D.C. home becoming a salon for influential Democratic politicians and policy makers. After serving as a professor of international affairs at Georgetown University, she was named ambassador to the United Nations in 1993, gaining a reputation for tough-mindedness and worked to increase the role of the U.S. in UN operations, particularly those with a military component. After her tenure as Secretary of State, Albright left government and founded the Albright Group, a consulting firm, worked as a frequent columnist on foreign affairs issues, served on the board of directors of the Council on Foreign Relations; furthermore, she wrote many books including The Mighty and the Almighty: Reflections of America, God, and World Affair (2006), Memo to the President Elect (2008), and Madam Secretary (2003). In 2012, Albright was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Fine condition.
