Album leaf fragment signed "Brig Genl Chief of Ordnance" by Dyer, who was made chief of ordnance at Washington, DC in 1864
Signature: "AB Dyer/Brig Genl/Chief of Ordnance". 4¾x2½. Dyer (1815-1874, born in Richmond, Virginia) was an American soldier who fought in the Amercian Civil War, among other wars. Dyer commanded the Springfield Armory from 1861 to 1864 and, on Sept. 12, 1864, was made brigadier general - breveted major general in 1865 - and chief of ordnance at Washington, DC. He held this position until he died. Dyer graduated from West Point in 1937 and served in the Seminole Wars from 1837 to 1838. He then served as lieutenant of ordnance in the Mexican-American War from 1846 to 1848. He was breveted a captain at the Battle of Santa Cruz de Rosales in that war. Lightly toned and creased. Light tears in upper right corner and left edge. Leaf fragment has been torn neatly from album on left edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
