Handwritten letter fragment to another general, citing his slow recovery from an illness
Autograph Letter Fragment signed: "AP Montesquiou", 1 page, 8x5¾. No place, no date. To the "Lieutenant General Commanding the Ninth Military Division". In French, loosely translated. "I am feeling better, Sir, but recovering slowly from the illness". Anne-Pierre, Marquis de Montesquiou-Fézensac (1739-1798) born to the ancient noble family of Armagnac, was brought up with the children of Louis XV (not including the ill-fated Louis XVI, a grandson). Serving in the French Army from 1754, he rose to the rank of Maréchal de Camp (the equivalent of a Major General) in 1780. Montesquiou-Fézensac also wrote poems and comedies good enough to merit admission to the Académie Française. A liberal in politics, the Marquis was elected to the Estates-General in 1789, and served as President of the Constituent Assembly in 1791. Returning to military service, he took command of the Army of the South, conquering Savoy in February 1792. That November, however, he was accused of royalist sympathies, and obliged to flee to Switzerland. Allowed to return to France in 1795 after the end of the Terror, he died in Paris. Creased and toned. Edges and corners worn. 4½in vertical tear through center fold (corrected with adhesive tape on verso). Small perforations at left edge. Pencil notes (unknown hand) in lower margin and on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
