The General signs his name in black ink
Document fragment signed: "C. C. Augur", 8x3¼. July 14, 1813. A fragmented document regarding payment from the Paymaster in the U.S. Army. General Christopher C. Augur (1821-1898), a West Point graduate (1843), was a staff officer in the Mexican War and a veteran of the Western frontier wars of the 1850s. Commandant of Cadets at West Point at the outset of the Civil War, he rose to brigade and then division commander, severely wounded at Cedar Mountain in 1862. Later that year, he led troops again at the siege of Fort Hudson, Louisiana. From 1863 to 1866, by now a Major General, he commanded the XXII Corps and the Military Department of Washington. Moses F. Webb, of Connecticut, joined the Union Army as Additional Paymaster of Volunteers in August 1861. On September 11, 1865, he was "dismissed from the service," a term used after a court martial conviction. Surface creases. Small notch on right margin. Corners lightly worn and creased. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Edges slightly worn. Slightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
