MAJOR GENERAL CHRISTOPHER C. AUGUR - DOCUMENT SIGNED 08/14/1865 - HFSID 284133

CHRISTOPHER C. AUGUR
As commander of the 22nd U.S. Army Corps, he orders the release on parole of an imprisoned paymaster
Document Signed: "C. C. Augur" as Major General, commanding, 7x4. Headquarters Department of Washington, August 14, 1865. Auger orders the Military Superintendent of the Old Capitol Prison to "immediately release the person of Major Moses F. Webb, paymaster, now in your custody, to be released on general parole." General Christopher C. Augur (1821-1898), a West Point graduate (1843), was a staff officer in the Mexican War and a veteran of the Western frontier wars of the 1850s. Commandant of Cadets at West Point at the outset of the Civil War, he rose to brigade, and then division commander, and was severely wounded at Cedar Mountain in 1862. Later that year, he once again led troops at the siege of Fort Hudson, Louisiana. From 1863 to 1866, by now a major general, he commanded the XXII Corps and the Military Department of Washington. The paymaster to which Augur refers in this document, Moses F. Webb of Connecticut, joined the Union Army as Additional Paymaster of Volunteers in August 1861. On September 11, 1865, he was "dismissed from the service," a term used after a court martial conviction. Horizontal and vertical fold creases. Lightly toned and soiled at edges. Left and top edges slightly ragged from previous attachment. Otherwise, fine condition.
