MAJOR GENERAL HENRY DEARBORN - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 10/25/1804 - HFSID 283525

 

HENRY DEARBORN
As Secretary of War (1804), he signs an autograph letter, ordering Col. Henry Burbeck to inspect shells and shot at Hope Furnace, New Jersey.
Autograph Letter signed: "Henry Dearborn" as Secretary of War. 1 page, 7¾x9¾. War Department, Washington, D.C., 1904 October 25. To Col. Henry Burbeck, in full: "If on a full inspection of the shells and shot at or near Hope Furnace in New Jersey you find the whole or any part thereof unfit for actual service, you will please to dispose of such part thereof to some of the proprietors of the furnaces or to other persons on the best terms in your power; and if any part should appear fit for use you will please to agree with Major Jackson, or some other suitable character, to transport the same to Fort Say in New York harbor. For the expense of your journey you will be entitled to a reasonable allowance. Respectfully your humble servant". HENRY DEARBORN (1751-1829) served in the Revolutionary War and was a colonel on General George Washington's staff at Yorktown (1781). A member of Congress from 1793-1797, Dearborn was Jefferson's Secretary of War (1801-1809). He was appointed by President Madison to replace Benjamin Lincoln as the second Collector of the Port of Boston. He left that position to fight as a major general in the War of 1812. From the papers of General HENRY BURBECK (1754-1848), a veteran of key battles of the Revolutionary War. He was chief of the Artillery Corps when he received these orders. Promoted to Brigadier General, he commanded the Connecticut State Militia during the War of 1812. Horizontal and vertical fold creases. Edges lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
