MAJOR GENERAL HOWELL COBB - SIGNATURE(S) - HFSID 27500

 
HOWELL COBB. Signature: "very respectfully/Howell Cobb/Brig Genl", in pencil, 1p, 5¾x1½. No date, but 1862-1863. Howell Cobb, Speaker of the House (1851-1853), resigned as Buchanan's Secretary of the Treasury (1857-1860) after Lincoln's election, urging his home state of Georgia to secede. He was president of the convention of the seceded states which drafted a Constitution for the Confederacy which assembled at Montgomery, Alabama, on February 24, 1861. During the Civil War, Cobb was appointed Brigadier General in 1862 and Major General in 1863, surrendering to Union forces at Macon, Georgia, in 1864. Creased. Irregular edges. Overall, fine condition.
