Shown in uniform as a US Marine Major General
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To/Richard Calow/With Best Wishes of/and regards from/Marion E. Carl/Maj. Gen. USMC Ret.". B/w, 8x10. Marion Eugene Carl (1915-1998) was the first Marine air ace of World War II. During the Battle of Midway, he claimed his first Zero, and was one of the few survivors among the island's land-based fighter pilots. Transferred to Guadalcanal, he earned ace status and probably shot down Junichi Sasai, a famous Japanese ace. By war's end, Carl had made 18.5 kills. After the war he became a test pilot, setting a new speed record in a Douglas Skystreak (650 mph in 1947). When Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier 6 years later, it was Carl's speed record he surpassed. He flew spy planes over China in the 1950s. Carl was still flying combat missions with the First Marine Division in Vietnam in 1965. He retired as a major general (as pictured here) in 1970. Carl died of a shotgun blast while defending his wife from a home intruder. Fine condition.
