Robert Anderson inscribes his signature on a card.
Inscribed Signature: "Mr & Mrs Hitchcock/Robert Anderson/Brig Gen USA", 3¼x2 card. Light white stains at blank left margin. Accompanied by an envelope, 5½x3, bearing a printed drawing in left portion in color, honoring "Fort Sumpter" (sic). Torn at blank lower left edge. Major Robert Anderson was in command of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, at the time of the Confederate attack, April 12, 1861, beginning the Civil War. Anderson was appointed Brigadier General in the Regular Army by President Lincoln on May 15, 1861. After an illness, he retired in 1863. He raised the U.S. flag over Fort Sumter on April 14, 1865, exactly four years after he hauled it down. Two items.
