WILLIAM BIRNEY. Signature: "William Birney/Brigadier General U.S.V.", 4¾x1¼, cut from letter. William Birney (1819-1907), who had become a Captain with the 1st New Jersey Infantry at the outbreak of the Civil War, fought in the campaigns of First Bull Run, Chancellorsville, Chaffin's Farm, Darbytown Road and Appomattox. Commissioned a Brigadier General on May 22, 1863, Birney became a recruiting officer for Black troops in Maryland. In 1864, he and his regiments became part of the Department of the South. They served under Major General Benjamin F. Butler in Virginia and joined other Black regiments to form the 3rd Division of the X Corps before becoming part (the 2nd Division) of the XXV Corps led by Major General Godfrey Weitzel. Birney, who was brevetted a Major General on March 13, 1865, left the military service in August of that year. After the war, he was U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. Light show through of mounting blue at left and right margins, touching 2 letters of writing. Fine condition.
