WILLIAM F. BARRY. Signature: "Respectfully/William F. Barry/Capt. 2nd Art.", 3x1¼. Barry (1818-1879) graduated in the West Point class of 1838. After service in Mexico, he was promoted to Captain of the 2nd Artillery (1852), with which he fought against the Seminole Indians in Florida and then in the attempt to pacify "bleeding Kansas". During the Civil War, he served as chief of artillery for Union Generals McDowell, McClellan and Sherman - participating with the latter in the march through Georgia. Between these field assignments, he with charged with supervising the massive artillery network which defended Washington, D.C. Mounting paper remnants on verso show through lightly at left and right edges, touching first and last letters of signature. ¼-inch nick in upper left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
