Letter from the Secretary of War dated 1875, transcribing a previous letter sent confirming the shipment of seeds to a Captain in Wisconsin
Autograph letter signed: "Wm. W. Belknap", 8x10½. 3 pages (integral leaf). March 12th, 1875. In part: "To the Commissioner of Agriculture, Sir: I have the honor to transmit, for your information, an extract from a letter received at the Department from Wm Wern, in charge of Fort Winnebago, dated Portage City, Wisconsin, March 5th 1875, as follows:-...In accordance with your request of the 13th, I have sent a supply of Garden and Flower seeds to your correspondent Capt. William William Wern". William W. Belknap (1829-1890) served bravely and effectively in the Civil War, wounded at Shiloh, and participating in the Battle of Corinth, the siege of Vicksburg, and Sherman's march through Georgia. He became President Grant's Secretary of War on October 25, 1869, succeeding William Tecumseh Sherman. Belknap was charged with corruption in office, admitted receiving bribes for the appointment of Indian post-traders and resigned from the Cabinet on March 7, 1876. He was impeached by the House of Representatives and was tried by the Senate. On August 1, 1876, Belknap was acquitted on the technical ground of lack of jurisdiction because he was no longer a government official. Toned. Corners lightly worn and creased. Multiple folds. Light surface creases. Heavily soiled across. Pencil notes (unknown hand). Some areas of writing bled, but clearly legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
