WILLIAM W. BELKNAP.
Manuscript LS: "Wm. W. Belknap" as Grant's Secretary of War, 11/4p, 73/4x91/2. Washington City, 1870 July 7. To the Governor of New York (John T. Hoffman). In full: "I have the honor to acknowledge your reference to this Department of the application of Mrs. Helen McLean, of 210, Jefferson Street, Albany, for the discharge of her son, Private James Edson, Co. E, 22nd Infantry, on the ground of minority, and to inform you that as the soldier's age, according to his own sworn statement, was 21 years when enlisted; as he is reported by his commanding officer to be an able-bodied soldier, and as his services are greatly needed in the Indian country, to which he has been transported at the public expense, his discharge cannot be granted." WILLIAM BELKNAP, President U.S. Grant's Secretary of War (1869-1876), met the end of his political career over issues of Indian management. Impeached for malfeasance in office for accepting bribes and kickbacks for obtaining Indian trading post concessions, Belknap resigned before the Senate voted, thus avoiding conviction as the Senate no longer had jurisdiction over him. Tiny stain in blank area above first line of text, else fine condition.
