As Secretary of War, he signs a conditional appointment to West Point, subject to examination, for George M. Brodhead
Military Appointment signed: "Wm. W. Belknap" as Secretary of War, 1 page, 8x10¼. Washington, 1873 March 3. Partly printed document informing George M. Brodhead of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, of his appointment as a Cadet at the US Military Academy, subject to examination by the Academic Review Board, and favorable reports as to his "personal, military and moral deportment." Ink notation (unknown hand) states that Brodhead's appointment came through J. B. Storm, a Member of Congress. William W. Belknap (1829-1890) served bravely and effectively in the Civil War, wounded at Shiloh, and participating in the Battle of Corinth, the siege of Vicksburg, and Sherman's march through Georgia. He became President Grant's Secretary of War on October 25, 1869, succeeding William Tecumseh Sherman. Belknap was charged with corruption in office, admitted receiving bribes for the appointment of Indian post-traders and resigned from the Cabinet on March 7, 1876. He was impeached by the House of Representatives and was tried by the Senate. On August 1, 1876, Belknap was acquitted on the technical ground of lack of jurisdiction because he was no longer a government official. Then, as now, nominations of West Point cadets come through members of a State's Congressional delegation, in this case John B. Storm (1836-1901), a Pennsylvania Democrat who served in Congress 1871-1875 and 1883-1887. Light surface creases. Tape on tear near bottom half. Normal mailing folds. Corners lightly worn. Toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
