Popular zoologist sends letter of thanks, signs name in black ink
Typed letter signed: "Marlin Perkins" in black ink. 1 page, 7¼x10½. Written on Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom letterhead. January 3, 1980. North Canton, Ohio. In full: "Dear Mr. Friscat, Thank you for your letter. One of my favorite sayings is one that my wife, Carol Perkins, often repeats. "I am only one, but I am someone. I can't do everything, but I can do something" Sincerely". At the age of seven, Marlin Perkins (1905-1986) was creating his own zoo: a collection of mostly snakes, mice, earthworms and toads. In 1944, Perkins became Director of Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo and, in 1945, he became the host of a live local TV show called Zoo Parade, which featured animals from the zoo. Zoo Parade was televised nationally on NBC from 1950-1957; from 1955-1957, the show was broadcast from zoos throughout the country. Perkins returned as Director of the St. Louis Zoo in 1962 and hosted Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom from 1963-1988. He followed migrating reindeer in Lapland, hog-tied alligators in the marshes of the Florida Everglades and dove into the water off Australia's Great Barrier Reef looking for sea serpents. He televised travels through the world's jungles and deserts, places few of his viewers had ever seen. Normal mailing folds. Corners creased. Light surface creases. Slightly soiled on creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
