Signed photo of the plumber in the Eisenhower Cabinet
Photograph signed: "Martin P. Durkin". B/w, 8x10. Martin Patrick Durkin (1894-1955) had been President of the Plumbers' and Pipe Fitters' Union, and served as Director of Labor for Illinois (1933-1941). In 1953, President Eisenhower chose Durkin, a Democrat, for Secretary of Labor in a Cabinet characterized as "Nine Millionaires and a Plumber." Durkin had hoped that Eisenhower would revise the Taft-Hartley Act, but was disappointed. He resigned after fewer than 8 months in office, the shortest tenure of any Secretary of Labor. Bottom corners cut. Minor unknown stain at lower right edge. Top corners creased. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
