Ink signature on a small card
Signature: "Mary Austin", 3½x2½ card. American novelist, poet and playwright Mary (Hunter) Austin (1868-1934) wrote about California and the American Southwest. An early environmentalist, she also championed the rights of women, of Native Americans and of Hispanic Americans. She married Stafford Wallace Austin in 1891. Her most successful work was Land of Little Rain (1903). Her play, Arrow Maker was performed at the New Theater (New York) in 1911. She spent her later years in Carmel, California, in a circle of writers which included Jack London and Ambrose Bierce. California's Mount Mary Austin, in the Sierra Nevada range, is named for her. Edges toned. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise fine condition.
