Autograph Poem signed: "Mary Clemmer Ames", 4 pages (integral
leaf), 6½x8 folded, 13x8 open flat. Her 14-verse, handwritten poem titled "Not
Dead," signed on final page. No place, no date. Mary (Clemmer) Ames
(1839-1884) was the highest paid female journalist of her day, commanding
a salary of $5,000 in 1871. Her "Woman's Letter from Washington," written
after her second marriage (to journal editor Edmund Hudson), were especially
popular. Ames wrote novels as well as poems. Her home in Washington, D. C. was a
social and literary center. Her collected works were published posthumously in
1885. 1 vertical fold crease through center. Lightly creased and toned. Upper
right corner creased. Otherwise fine condition.
