His signature as Secretary of Labor, affixed to a page with a captioned newspaper photo showing him signing a bill as Governor of Massachusetts
Signature: "Maurice J. Tobin" as Secretary of Labor, 5x3 card with typed caption, affixed to a 8½x11 page with newspaper photo of Tobin as Governor of Massachusetts, signing the Port Authority Bill. Maurice J. Tobin (1901-1953), a former Mayor of Boston (1938-1945) and Governor of Massachusetts (1945-1947), was President Truman's Secretary of Labor from 1948 to 1953. As Governor, he had increased unemployment insurance and workers compensation, achievements which - along with his active campaigning for Truman in 1948 - no doubt helped secure him the Cabinet post. Today commuters pay $3.00 each time they enter Boston via the Tobin Bridge. From the private collection of Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009). Ward, a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II, went on to become President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Toned. Fine condition.
