New York Times reporter Meigs O. Frost signed this white card for Audrey Ovington, daughter of the first airmail pilot Earle Ovington.
Inscribed card signed "To Audrey/Ovington - from/Meigs O. Frost" in blue ink. Blue ink notations at bottom right corner in unknown hand. 5¼x3¼ card. AUDREY OVINGTON was the daughter of EARLE OVINGTON (1879-1936), who became the first airmail pilot on Sept. 23, 1911, when he carried a load of mail 5 ½ miles over Long Island in New York. She also operated the Cold Spring Tavern in Santa Barbara, California, one the first restaurants to serve ranch dressing. MEIGS O. FROST (1882-1950) was an American author and journalist with a fairly busy career. He wrote four books - A Marine Tells It to You, I'm Alone, Old New Orleans and Antoine's of Old New Orleans - and 600 short stories as well as reporting for the New York Times, which he joined in 1909. He was also a second lieutenant of artillery during the Mexican Expedition against Pancho Villa (1916-1917) and a public relations officer for the Marines during World War II. The professional newspaper fraternity Sigma Delta Chi also awarded him its distinguished service award in 1940 for his reportage of Louisiana political scandals. Lightly toned, soiled and bowed. Mounting residue on verso (no show-through). Otherwise in fine condition.
