OVETA CULP HOBBY
The first U.S. Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare is shown from the chest up in this 5x7 black and white photograph.
Photograph signed: "Oveta Culp Hobby". B/w, 5x7 overall, image 4½x6½, (one surface). Hobby helped develop the Women's Army Corps (WACs) and served as its Director from 1942-1945. From 1953-1955, she served in President Eisenhower's cabinet as the first Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare and was Editor and President of the Houston "Post" from 1938-1942 and 1955-1983. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
