PAUL D. BOYER
The Nobel Prize winner (Chemistry, 1997) signs a First Day Cover promoting the Knoxville World's Fair.
Philatelic Envelope signed: "Paul D. Boyer", 6½x3¾. First Day Cover Fossil Fuels 20-cent Fossil fuels Knoxville World's Fair stamp affixed, postmarked Knoxville, Tennessee, April 29, 1982, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. A biochemist at UCLA, Boyer (b. 1918) was co-recipient with British scientist John E. Walker of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for elucidation of the enzymatic mechanism underlying the synthesis of adenosine tryphosphate (ATP)." This is the process by which molecules transmute light, air, water and food into energy. His research was once so controversial that the leading journal in his field declined to publish it, but Boyer's ideas have since been convincingly confirmed. Slightly yellowed at blank margins. Fine condition.
