PEARL S. BUCK - AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED - HFSID 255428

PEARL S. BUCK
Handwritten note from the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Autograph note signed: "To Ida Tarbell,/with admiration and affection,/Pearl S. Buck.", 4½x4. PEARL SYDENSTRICKER BUCK (1892-1973) was the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (1938). Best known for her novels about China (including The Good Earth; 1932 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction), Buck wrote over 70 novels as well as biographies, an autobiography (My Several Worlds, 1954), dramas, children's literature and translations from the Chinese. IDA MINERVA TARBELL (1857-1944) helped to legitimize investigative journalism during her career with "McClure's Magazine" (associate editor, 1894-1906; editor, 1906-1915). She is best known for her serialized exposé on the Standard Oil Company and John D. Rockefeller. These carefully researched articles were published in two volumes in 1904 as History of the Standard Oil Company. Slightly creased. Mounting remnants on verso (light show through at "Buck" and 1 letter of inscription). Irregularly cut at left and lower edges. Overall, fine condition.
