PETER COLT - DOCUMENT SIGNED 03/02/1790 CO-SIGNED BY: RALPH POMEROY - HFSID 1949

PETER COLT and RALPH POMEROY
The Connecticut industrialist signs a document as the State Treasurer of Connecticut.
Document signed: "Peter Colt" as Treasurer, and "Ralph Pomeroy" as Comptroller, 1 page, 7x5¼. Comptroller's-Office, State of Connecticut, 1790 March 2. In full: "Pay Ebenezer Avery ten shillings & four pence out of the taxes appropriated for the Payment of the Civil List, and charge the State." Bolded words in Colt's hand. Colt has also written: "£0„10„4". Endorsed on verso by a relative of Ebenezer Avery. Peter Colt (1744-1824), a Connecticut industrialist and financier, was a paymaster during the Revolutionary War. He was co-founder of the Hartford textile mill which produced the suits worn by George Washington, John Adams and many members of Congress at the first Presidential Inauguration (1789). The brown cloth from which the suits were cut became known as "Congress brown." Colt, who attended the state ratifying convention for the US Constitution, was Connecticut State Treasurer (1790-1794), and later managed the first cotton mill in New Jersey. He was the grandfather of firearms manufacturer Samuel Colt. RALPH POMEROY served as a Military Paymaster, for wages, reimbursement for expenses or loss due to damages during the Revolutionary War. Printed name of former Treasurer (John Lawrence) has been crossed out in ink. Circular cancellation hole has removed the majority of the "Ralph" in the Ralph Pomeroys' signature. Ink notes (unknown hand) at upper left and on verso. Irregularly cut. Otherwise, fine condition.
