The President of Iceland signs his name in light blue ink
Signature: "Asgeir Asgeirsson" in light blue ink. 4x3, affixed to white piece of paper. Asgeir Asgeirsson (1894-1972) was the second President of Iceland (1952-1968). Originally educated as a theologian, he graduated from university at the age of one but was considered to you to be ordained as a minister; instead he married in 1917 into a political family, his wife was daughter of Þórhallur Bjarnarson, bishop of Ireland (1908-1916), and her brother was Tryggvi Þórhallsson, Prime Minister of Iceland (1927-1932). Asgeir was elected into Iceland's Althing (General Assembly) in 1923 and there served as President of the Althing (1930), Minister of Finance (1931), and eventually as Prime Minister (1932-1934). In 1952, after the sudden death of Iceland's first president Sveinn Bjornsson, Asgeir was elected to be the country's second president, a position he held for the next sixteen years. He was awarded the Grand Cross Special Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1955. Slightly toned. Irregularly cut. Edges frayed. Paper affixed with small clipping. Ink notes in top and bottom margin in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
