CALVIN COOLIDGE and HARRY S. NEW
The President and Postmaster General sign the appointment of a Postmaster for Garden City, New York (1924).
Partly Printed DS: "Calvin Coolidge" as 30th U.S. President and "Harry S. New" as Postmaster General, 1 page, 18x14. Washington, 1924 February 15. In part: "Know ye, That, reposing special trust and confidence in the intelligence, diligence and discretion of Thomas J. Courtney, I have nominated, and, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, do appoint him Postmaster at Garden City, in the County of Nassau, State of New York, and do authorize and empower him to execute and fulfill the duties of that office...." 2-inch diameter embossed seal at lower left. Harry S. New had been appointed Postmaster General by President Harding on February 27, 1923. He was recommissioned by President Coolidge and served to the end of the Coolidge presidency in 1929. During the time this document was signed (1923-1924), the Teapot Dome scandal from the administration of Coolidge's predecessor, Warren G. Harding, was revealed in Senate investigations. Lightly creased. Vertical folds, one touches the "i" in Calvin, else fine condition.
