PRESIDENT FULGENCIO BATISTA ZALDIVAR (CUBA) - DOCUMENT SIGNED 11/06/1933 CO-SIGNED BY: ANTONIO GUITERAS Y HOLMES - DOCUMENT 273003

SHORTLY AFTER THE 1933 OVERTHROW OF THE CUBAN GOVERNMENT, BATISTA AND THE MAN THAT HE WOULD LATER ORDER KILLED SIGN A DOCUMENT ALLOWING A CITIZEN TO CARRY A FIREARM WITHIN CUBA'S TERRITORY

FULGENCIO BATISTA and ANTONIO GUITERAS.
Rare Typed DS:
"F. Batista" as Colonel of the ruling military force and "A Guiteras" as Secretary of the Interior, 1p, 8½x11. Havana, Cuba, 1933 November 6. On letterhead of the Department of War and Navy. A "To Whom it May Concern" missive in Spanish. Not translated, but relating to permission for Dr. Pedro Hernandez to legally carry a firearm anywhere within Cuba's territory. In the year he signed this document, FULGENCIO BATISTA y ZALDIVAR (1901-1973) led the coup that deposed provisional Cuban President Carlos de Céspedes y Quesada. His uprising, known as the "Revolt of the Sergeants", overthrew the President's liberal government on September 4, 1933, marking the beginning of the Army's influence on the running of the country's government. As dictator, Batista controlled the government from 1933-1940, when he assumed the title of President of Cuba (1940-1944). Batista retired in 1944, but he returned to power by an army coup in 1952. His regime was overthrown by Fidel Castro in 1959. Ironically, Castro had been influenced by ANTONIO GUITERAS HOLMES (1906-1935), who was a leading Cuban politician in the 1930s and the founder of Joven Cuba, a proletarian political organization. Guiteras, who had participated in a coup to overthrow Cuban President Gerardo Machado y Morales in 1931, served as Minister of the Interior under Cuban President Dr. Ramon Grau San Martin. In 1935, Guiteras and a Venezuelan compatriot, Carlos Aponte, were assassinated in Matanzas province, a murder ordered by Batista. Guiteras' signature is extremely rare. This signature is paired with that of the man who ordered his killing, making it especially desirable. Lightly creased with folds, vertical fold at the "G" of Guiteras' signature. Stamped Cuban seal nicks the "F" in Batista's signature, light embossed seal touches the "A" and the "it" in Guiteras' signature. Separations at blank margins at horizontal folds, chipped at upper blank margin at mid-vertical fold and at edges, minor pinhead-size holes at crossfolds. Lightly foxed, shaded at folds. Three pinhead-size holes at blank left margin. Ink stain and pencil note (unknown hand) at upper margin. Overall, fragile condition.
