PRESIDENT GEORGE WASHINGTON - AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED IN TEXT - DOCUMENT 286020

GEORGE WASHINGTON
This extremely rare undated note, handwritten to his wife Martha, was sent in response to a suggestion by her nephew John Dandridge
Autograph Note Signed in Text: with "General" and "Washington" in text. Penned and signed on verso: "Washington's hand-writing./ Jared Sparks". 1 page, 5x4. No place, no date. George Washington transcribes a letter his wife Martha wrote, then adds a comment. In full: "I have communicated [crossed-out words] the contents of your letter to the General, who readily consents to comply with your request and will, accordingly send the Bonds to Mr. B. Bassett, to bring such thereon. N.B. The above was given in answer by Mrs. Washington to the proposition of Mr. Jno Dandridge". General Washington had started to write "Dandridge" after "Mrs." but then changed the "D" to a "W" and penned his wife's name. BURWELL BASSETT (1734-1793) was married to Martha Washington's sister, Anna Maria. In addition, their daughter Frances Bassett came to live at Mount Vernon in 1784 and, in 1785, married George Washington's nephew George Augustine Washington, son of his youngest brother Charles. JOHN DANDRIDGE (1758-1799) was Martha's nephew.  JARED SPARKS (1789-1866) edited The Writings of George Washington (12 vols., 1834-1838), and Life of George Washington (1839). The writings of George Washington were collected by Sparks from the archives of the capitals of the thirteen original states and from the papers of General Washington, preserved at Mt. Vernon. A professor at Harvard (1838-1849), Sparks was President of Harvard from 1849-1853. Anything written  by George Washington referring to his wife MARTHA WASHINGTON is scarce and desirable. Documents relating to Washington family matters rarely appear on the market. This note mentioning his wife and her brother-in-law and nephew, relating to financial matters, and bearing "General" and "Washington" in Washington's hand is of particular interest. Lightly foxed. Lightly soiled along 1/8-inch of left edge. ¼-inch vertical tear in lower left. Sparks note on verso shows through faintly. The final "s" in "Sparks" has inexplicably been crossed out. Otherwise, fine condition.
