PRESIDENT GROVER CLEVELAND - MILITARY APPOINTMENT SIGNED 01/23/1888 CO-SIGNED BY: WILLIAM C. ENDICOTT - DOCUMENT 16910

GROVER CLEVELAND
Military Appointment signed as President in January 1888, also signed by William C. Endicott as Secretary of War
Military Appointment signed: "Grover Cleveland" as President, "Wm. C. Endicott" as Secretary of War, 13¾x17. Washington, D.C., 1888 January 23. Appointment of a 2nd lieutenant in the 1st Regiment of Artillery. War Department seal affixed in lower left corner. GROVER CLEVELAND (1837-1908), formerly Mayor of Buffalo and Governor of New York (1883-1885) served as the 22nd and 24th President (1885-1889, 1893-1897). He won the popular vote all three times he ran (1884, 1888, 1892), losing the electoral vote and the presidency in 1888 to Benjamin Harrison. He was the only Democrat elected President in more than a half century between the departure of Buchanan (1861) and the inauguration of Wilson (1913). A conservative "Bourbon Democrat," Cleveland favored the gold standard, lower tariffs, and economy in government, exercising his veto more often than any previous President. He opposed political corruption and patronage. The Panic of 1893 blighted Cleveland's second term, assuring a Republican victory in 1896 and a very different Democratic candidate and platform in 1896 and after. WILLIAM CROWNINSHIELD ENDICOTT (1826-1900) had been a member of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (1879-1882), and was the Democratic candidate for governor of that State in 1884. He served as Secretary of War in Cleveland's first term (1885-1889). An active Secretary of War, he introduced examinations for officer promotions and revamped the nation's coastal fortification. Horizontal and vertical fold creases-affecting "Endi" of signature. Lightly soiled and creased. Left edge waffled. Recorded information at top left corner smeared and faded from moisture. Otherwise, fine condition.
