PRESIDENT GROVER CLEVELAND - MILITARY APPOINTMENT SIGNED 02/03/1896 CO-SIGNED BY: BRIGADIER GENERAL GEORGE D. RUGGLES, DANIEL S. LAMONT - DOCUMENT 13008

 

GROVER CLEVELAND and DANIEL S. LAMONT. Partly Printed DS: "Grover Cleveland" as President and "Daniel S. Lamont" as Secretary of War, 1p, 15½x19½. On vellum. Washington, 1896 February 3. Countersigned: "Geo D. Ruggles" as Adjutant General in docket written in red ink at top left portion. Appointment of John James Brereton as "Captain of Infantry". DANIEL S. LAMONT was President Cleveland's Secretary of War from 1893-1897. Lamont had been Cleveland's Private Secretary when he was Governor of New York (1883-1885). Brigadier General GEORGE D. RUGGLES (1833-1904) was Adjutant General from 1893-1897. Blue paper seal affixed at lower left. Lightly creased. Folds. Vertical fold touches "t" in Lamont and horizontal fold touches Cleveland's signature. Overall, fine condition.
